Surviving Winter Appeal
Monday, October 10th, 2011 at 1:43 pm
Donate today and support the Surviving Winter Campain, part of a national appeal designed to help the thousands of vulnerable and older people affected by fuel poverty in the UK every year.
With rising fuel bills and the prospect of another cold winter, older and vulnerable people across the UK are at risk. It is estimated that 28% of the West Midlands suffer from fuel poverty with over half of them aged over 60.
Last winter a shocking 500 older people died from causes directly related to the cold and poor living conditions in Coventry and Warwickshire.
Community foundations all over the UK are co-ordinating the campaign, which is being supported by Saga magazine.
Locally the appeal is being co-ordinated by Heart of England Community Foundation, which will channel all the funds raised to provide support to older and vulnerable people who are suffering because of fuel poverty. The money will be directed to those most in need, to enable them to stay warm, eat well and remain mobile, as well as help them in practical ways such as ensuring they can make doctor’s appointments, get to the shops and maintain an active social life.

“Sometimes we find ourselves with a surplus, a small excess that’s nice but not necessary. This Appeal gives a chance to turn that surplus into a survival ticket for those who – without some very practical help this winter – will struggle to reach the spring. I am glad to commend this simple way of caring for those in real need.”
The Right Reverend Dr Christopher Cocksworth
Bishop of Coventry
